The Walter Gerrells Performing Arts & Exhibition Center has been a gathering place for entertainment, celebrations, and community events in Carlsbad for more than 50 years.
The building was originally constructed in 1970 as the Desert Fiesta Theatre. In 1972, local philanthropist Bob Light, whose company helped construct the theatre, purchased the building. Around the same time, Mayor Walter Gerrells proposed that the City of Carlsbad take ownership of the facility and establish a board to oversee its management and maintenance. Mr. Light later donated the building to the City, and it became the Carlsbad Civic Center. In 1994, the facility was renamed the Walter Gerrells Civic Center in honor of Mayor Gerrells. Today, it is known as the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts & Exhibition Center.
The center offers versatile spaces for a wide range of events. The main auditorium seats up to 1,865 guests and provides an impressive setting for concerts, live performances, and other large-scale events. The Annex accommodates up to 800 guests and can host live music and other performances, as well as banquets, weddings, quinceañeras, and community gatherings.
