As part of the City's ongoing efforts to manage invasive aquatic vegetation, the City of Carlsbad will apply a second treatment of environmentally safe aquatic shade to certain areas of the Pecos River within city limits and Lake Carlsbad on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The aquatic shade is a blue and black dye that helps prevent sunlight from reaching the riverbed, reducing the growth of invasive aquatic vegetation. It is safe for people and animals and will not permanently stain skin, boats, equipment, or infrastructure. The aquatic shade is expected to dissipate within 7 to 10 days. Swimming, boating, fishing, and other recreational activities remain safe while the aquatic shade is present in the water. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the aquatic shade is available on the City's website under the "Invasive Aquatic Vegetation" link. The City continues to work with a biologist and the New Mexico Environment Department to obtain permits for additional environmentally safe aquatic vegetation treatments, including herbicides. Because some treatments depend on water temperature and environmental conditions, management efforts may continue throughout multiple seasons. The City will continue to notify the public before any future treatments.
