Everyone wants to see more cleanup on the Hobbs Highway, and wherever there is trash, and Warden Billy Massingill, with the Eddy County Detention Center, has been providing some critical assistance. Massingill recently implemented a program where inmates clean up along the highway from 6:30-10 a.m. They’ve done several miles already and the improvement is noticeable. Of course, this ongoing problem will require an ongoing commitment, so we hope to see this continue for as long as possible. Thank you to all members of the Eddy County Commission and County Manager Al Davis for supporting this effort. Thank you to the inmates who are participating as well.
There’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone who wants want to help clean up Carlsbad this weekend. Keep Carlsbad Beautiful’s Downtown Clean-Up will be from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday. Meet in front of the Eddy County Courthouse to get started. Water, snacks and pickup supplies will be provided. On another beautification issue – the lights at the dog park have been installed and have been very well received.
Also, please don’t forget that our summer concert series begins Saturday as well. Local musician JJ Aguilar will be performing from 7-9 p.m. at the new gazebo located by the Carlsbad Water Park. Bring your own blankets and chairs to come out and enjoy this free concert series. We are filling up our schedule for the summer but still have some spots available if you are interested.
Another great night for Trevor Rogers. The former Carlsbad High School standout threw eight strikeouts in seven innings and allowed four hits to lead the Marlins to an 11-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. In a year when pitchers are drawing all of the attention in baseball, Rogers is standing out above everyone.
Save the date: The Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition will be hosting a roundtable discussion addressing underage drinking and a proposed “social host” ordinance. This event will be in person, and will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29. The City of Carlsbad and Carlsbad Police Department look forward to participating.
We had many residents ask us about the large number of dead fish spotted in the river over the past few weeks. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish conducted a study on June 6-7 and concluded that the kills were likely caused by short-lived golden algae blooms. The algae blooms were initiated by a storm runoff and flooding from a few days earlier. There was no evidence of chemical pollutants from the runoff. Golden algae blooms have taken place after rainstorms in the past and resulted in fish dying. They are only harmful during the bloom and are not a health risk for humans.
Sincerely,
Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
