Congratulations to all of Carlsbad and Eddy County’s 2021 graduates. We enjoyed attending a wonderful ceremony for the Early College High School Friday morning. ECHS Valedictorian Azali Luna and Salutatorian Ysabel Felt delivered excellent speeches, as did Representative Cathrynn Brown and Superintendent Gerry Washburn. City Hall Intern Valeria Quezada, who is the BPA President, conducted the tassel ceremony and did an outstanding job. Carlsbad High School’s graduation is Friday evening. It has been a challenging year for many people, but everything seems to be headed in the right direction. There certainly seems to be a bright future for Carlsbad and for our students.
We’ve talked about some of the different events coming up, but we felt it would be helpful to have them all organized in one place. Here are a few of the City of Carlsbad-sponsored activities coming up.
- Our Summer Concert Series at the Beach Gazebo will kick off at 7 p.m. June 12. We’re thrilled to announce that JJ Aguilar will be our opening performer that evening. We’ve also received commitments from Art Vandelay, Last Child and JD Strait, and we are looking for more local talent to fill our agenda for the summer. We’re going to have bands performing at this gazebo (near the Carlsbad Water Park) throughout the summer. If you have a local band that would like to play this summer, please contact Cheyenne Methola at the Carlsbad Mayor’s Office (575) 887-1191 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
- The “Spirit of Carlsbad” ceremony will be from 6-8 p.m. June 17 at the Beach Bandshell. We hope you’ll join us and help honor some of Carlsbad’s Unsung Heroes. Linda Dodd and Jessica Onsurez will be our co-hosts, and it promises to be a wonderful evening. We will also be broadcasting this ceremony over the City’s Facebook page for those of you who can’t make it.
- The City of Carlsbad and Carlsbad Police Department are hosting a Beach Volleyball Tournament beginning June 19. The $100 entry fee goes to support the Special Olympics. There will be a dunk tank and vendors. Teams will consist of six players, and bracketing will be set up based on how many teams we have. For more information, please contact Orlando Moreno at (575) 885-2111 or Steve Garza at (575) 689-8351
- Of course, our “Old Fashioned, Patriotic, Fourth of July” celebration will be July 3 and 4. You can get updated schedule information by visiting https://www.cityofcarlsbadnm.com/independence-day-2021/ and clicking on the Independence Day 2021 tab. We are still looking for a few more sponsors. Email email@example.com for more information. As part of the weekend’s ceremony, we are planning to honor all of our World War II veterans who are still with us at a July 3 ceremony on the Eddy Courthouse Lawn and appreciate any assistance you can provide with reaching out to these individuals.
