Update 5-27-21

The City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Police Department are hosting a beach volleyball tournament beginning at 9 a.m. June 19 at our new sand volleyball courts at the beach area. This will be a fundraiser for the Special Olympics. There’s a $100 entry fee for the 6-person competition, and there will also be a dunk tank set up where you can throw balls at our fire chief, assistant police chief and other officials. We’ll have several vendors and a DJ there.

The tournament will be organized based upon how many teams sign up, but it will be open to everyone. We already have received interest from several local teams, and the registration cost will support a good cause. For more information, please call Cpl. Orlando Moreno with the Carlsbad Police Department at (575) 885-2111 or Steve Garza at the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex at (575) 689-8351.

Cpl. Moreno and other volunteers also organized a golf tournament for the Special Olympics last week. The tournament raised $6,000. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is set to begin at 7 a.m. June 5 this year. Please support our Special Olympians by turning out for the torch run and then competing in the volleyball tournament.

Planning events over the past year has been a challenge to everyone, and some organizations have decided to stick with online formats, because they weren’t sure what to expect. One of the programs that will remain virtual this summer is our excellent Inspired by Science program. Virtual summer camp is planned for July 12-15 this year. For more information, please visit https://inspiredbyscience.org.

Thank you again to Deanna Antiporda and all of the volunteers who work so hard on this program every year.

We are in the process of setting up a summer concert series at the new gazebo near the water park. If you know of some local bands who are interested in playing on Saturday night at the summer, please contact Cheyenne Methola at the mayor’s office. Stay tuned for more details.

Yesterday’s attendance at the Carlsbad Water Park was very good. We hope everyone enjoyed the bonus days we were able to add this week. The Carlsbad Water Park will open again on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. We are also doing reservations for evening parties at the water park. Finally, as mentioned before, both of our splash pads (at the beach and at the sports complex) are open for the summer.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
