Update 5-18-21

Keep your eyes up in the sky on May 24. That’s the day we’ve been informed that the Goodyear Blimp plans a stop at Cavern City Air Terminal. The blimp expects to arrive at around 5 p.m. on the 24th, land for the night and then take off the following morning. We don’t have a departure time yet, but you’ll certainly be able to get a good view of the blimp from outside of the airport fence.  Goodyear’s U.S. fleet consists of three helium-filled airships, each of them 246 feet long. The company launched its first blimp in 1925.

COVID-19 Update: There were seven total new positive COVID-19 cases announced for Eddy County over the three-day weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).  Those numbers are below where we need to be to remain Turquoise, and our numbers have been consistently at that level for several weeks now. We do not expect any changes in our status in the near future.

There will be a COVID-19 vaccination clinic (Pfizer) for ages 12 and up on Monday, May 24 at the civic center (4012 National Parks Highway). The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Minors will need a signed consent form. Prior registration is preferred, but you can also register at the clinic itself. You can sign up at https://cvvaccine.nmhealth.org/. The City of Carlsbad is proud to be working with Eddy County, the Department of Health and Carlsbad Medical Center in organizing these weekly clinics. We’ve received a number of requests from people asking for a student/youth clinic, and we’re pleased that this is taking place.

According to the New Mexico Department of Health, Eddy County currently reports a full vaccination rate of 30.8%.

Congratulations to Carlsbad High School’s Dance Team. The team finished third in the state tournament last week with a score of 165.53. Roswell finished first and Farmington took second. Carlsbad’s Cheer team finished sixth in their state competition with a score of 145.60. Great work everyone.  In other sports news, Miami Marlin Trevor Rogers is listed as the probable pitcher for Wednesday’s game against the Phillies. Rogers is looking for his third straight win.

There’s a new way to tour Carlsbad Caverns National Park from the comfort of your own home. We’ve been informed that the Discovery Channel has a new game called Blue Planet VR coming out for the new Oculus system. One of the programs offers a chance to tour through Carlsbad Caverns. We still prefer the real thing, but it is certainly great to see our local national park getting some well-deserved attention.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
