Update 2-19-21

Construction at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Callaway Drive is scheduled to begin on Monday, with Constructors Inc. in charge of the project. The first phase of this project is to install a new sewer line in the area. As with all construction projects, these important improvements will certainly create an inconvenience for the short term.

There will be signs in place informing motorists of detours, and the city will have several electronic signs installed in the area to provide advance notice and additional information. We expect the intersection to be closed for two weeks, though residents and businesses will have access to their property at all times during the closure. Please plan for some delays during this process and obey all construction signs.

Work hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you have any questions about this project, please call Constructors Inc. at (575) 885-8838.

On the subject of road safety, thank you to Chevron and Beverly Allen for the recent generous donation in support of public safety.  Chevron’s $30,000 donation will go toward road improvements including a new Speed Awareness Monitor and trailer platform. These LED lights are legible up to 1,000 feet away, and the monitor will be set up at locations around town. It will also help our police department qualify for other grants in the future. Chevron has been supportive of law enforcement in Carlsbad for many years and has also made contributions to support our outstanding K-9 force.  Chevron has also supported other safety improvements around Carlsbad, such as by adding “no slip” concrete pads to the Carlsbad Water Park. We’re honored to have such a great partner in the community and look forward to many years of working together.

We received another update from former Carlsbad resident Dr. John Andrews, who is conducting interviews with Dame Judi Dench on Feb. 24 and Sir Ian McKellen on March 3. You can watch these one-hour programs live at 10 a.m. Mountain Time. Please register by visiting www.shakesguild.org and clicking on the blue links. Carlsbad is very honored to be represented by Andrews during these important cultural efforts.

A new plaque has been installed near the Huey at the Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park listing the names of the generous individuals who made the helicopter possible.  Thanks again to everyone for their hard work and dedication.  The Huey will help serve as a reminder about all that our veterans, especially out Vietnam veterans, have done for this community and this country.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
