Update 2-5-21

We would like to join all other New Mexicans in offering our condolences to the family and friends of Officer Darian Jarrott, a New Mexico State Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty on Thursday in Luna County. Flags have been ordered statewide to be flown at half-staff through Feb. 9 to honor Jarrott.

Officer Jarrott, 28, was well known to members of the Carlsbad community and was well liked and respected here. Last year, he visited Carlsbad’s kindergarten and read to local children. According to news reports, he joined New Mexico State Police in 2015, and he is survived by three small children and had been expecting a fourth. Please keep all of our police officers in your prayers and thank them for their service.

The City of Carlsbad’s drop-off convenience station has been a very popular feature in our community. We’re pleased to announce that the station, located at 301 E. Plaza Street, is now also open on Sundays. Drop-off hours are 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. This station is for residential use and can accommodate small utility trailers. We provide brooms and shovels by request. For more information, please call our solid waste department at 885-0042.

More tax help services are available: AARP Foundation Tax-Aide service, located at 1302 W Pierce St. (Peter Lutheran Church,) is planning to open Feb 11th. The tax preparation will be by appointment only. You can pick up your Intake/Interview sheet and instructions on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church fellowship hall.

As most of you know, many of our legislative efforts are taking place virtually this year. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant will be holding its virtual legislative breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Feb. 9. You can register for the event here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwudO-hrjwtGNBkjANkczBeR8FRdtUfCojb

Legislative Update: House Bill 212, which is the bill introduced by Rep. Brown and Rep. Townsend seeking independence for Carlsbad’s college, is currently on the agenda to be introduced to the Local Government, Land Grants and Cultural Affairs committee on Feb. 9. HB 49, which is Rep. Brown’s bill exempting Social Security from Income Tax, was reported by the finance committee with a “Do Pass” recommendation on Feb. 4.  You can watch all committee hearings this year by visiting www.nmlegis.gov and clicking on the webcast button on the top of the screen.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
