Update: 9-22-20

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce made a very positive announcement this week. Marketing director Shontrelle Suzann Combs posted a short video declaring that this year’s Christmas on the Pecos was back on the table. The Chamber has submitted a plan outlining COVID-safe practices to the Governor’s office and is moving forward. Tickets for this annual event go on sale on Oct 15.

If you haven’t done Christmas on the Pecos in a few years, this might be the year for a revisit. Our residents along the river work very hard to put together this annual event. Christmas on the Pecos is certainly important for our tourist industry, but it is also a great way for Carlsbad residents to celebrate this community. Our Chamber of Commerce President, Clint Cone, really knows about the value of Christmas on the Pecos and will personally make sure it goes well. Congratulations to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and our entire community on this positive news.

This has been a very tough six months for our senior care facilities. Lakeview Christian Home is hosting “7 Nights of Prayer” and asking for residents, families, friends and all members of the community to pray for Lakeview from 7-9 p.m. every night through Saturday.

“We are asking you to join us for a moment of prayer, scripture or song, whatever is in your heart, to pray for us,” writes Chaplain Terry McKean.

You can pray anywhere you like, of course, but McKean will have a few socially-distanced chairs set up in the front parking lot at the Northgate Unit on West Pierce for those who wish to participate there.  A chaplain will also be available at the Landsun Unit on Westridge. If no seats are available, please stay in your car until an opening is seen. No matter where you do it, please keep Lakeview and all of our senior-care facilities in your prayers.

In yesterday’s Current-Argus, the paper reported that a company called Milestone Environmental Services is in the process of opening its first facility in New Mexico. Milestone’s method of slurry injection targets deep, underground areas up to 6,000 feet deep. We welcome Milestone to the area and will be happy to assist them in any way needed.

Artesia General Hospital has updated its collection of COVID-related data for Eddy County. As of Sept. 21, the hospital reports two current COVID-19 hospitalizations in Eddy County. The hospital also reported 14,678 total tests here. It is a relief to see that some of the patients who have recently been hospitalized seem to be doing better.

Trevor Rogers update: Trevor bounced back from a rough start on Monday to keep the Marlins in the game in a 5-4 loss to the Braves. He struck out the last six hitters he faced during his four-inning stint and told ESPN he felt like it was his best showing so far.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
