'Playground on the Pecos' is a volunteer effort to build
a unique community-designed, community-built wooden playground.
It will have 15,000 square feet of towers, swings, slides,
hiding places and untold adventure rising on the banks of
the Pecos River.
On October 25th, 2001, the Project Playground Committee held
a Design Day. An architect from Leathers & Associates
spent a very long day meeting with the committee and school
children to gather ideas for the playground. By the end of
the day, a preliminary design was presented to the community.
The playground design is unique in its incorporation of architectural
features of Carlsbad, such as caves and rock climbing areas
and the flumes.
The estimated cost of $250,000 has come from private and
public donations and various fund raising efforts. Project
Playground is a community-based effort that will be built
within ten days, utilizing volunteers. Construction began
on September 5, 2002 and was completed on September 15, 2002.
