The City of Carlsbad Shooting Range and Action Sports Recreation Area is not for fire arms practice only. This recreation facility includes a variety of activities such as radio control model airplane and go-cart competitions. The recreation area is open to the public year round, seven days a week.

This 645 acre recreation area is located at 314 North Happy Valley Road, which is 2.5 miles north of Happy Valley on the Truck By-Pass.

Included are four trap ranges, a pistol range, small and large bore rifle ranges, silhouette rifle and pistol ranges, muzzle loaders range, archery range, cross-wind runways for radio controlled model airplanes, and Yucca Flats Raceway - a competition go-cart track.

Several groups utilize the recreation area throughout the year holding monthly matches, providing Youth Hunter Education and Youth Hunter Education Challenge programs, and area and regional competitions. These groups along with the New Mexico National Guard include:
