CARLSBAD'S BRINE WELL

UPDATE(S):

BACKGROUND

A brine well is a salt mine used in oilfield services. Such a well exists near the intersection of U.S. 285 and U.S. 180-62.  Investigators with the state’s Oil Conservation Division (OCD) became concerned by the fact that the well has several features in common with two other nearby brine wells that have recently collapsed. The OCD began setting up an early monitoring system. Currently, the City of Carlsbad, working with a contractor, RESPEC, is in charge of the monitoring  process.

Monitoring efforts have recently expanded, and the City is also moving forward with the process that will allow it to determine the size and shape of the underground cavity. From there, the City can make a better decision on what to do next.

Eddy County’s Office of Emergency Management, working with the Carlsbad Police Department, the Carlsbad Fire Department and other agencies, has put together a precautionary response plan.
