CAVERN CITY AIR TERMINAL
The Cavern City Air Terminal, during World War II was used by the United States Army Air Force Training Command. Today, the airfield is a public-use airport located five (5) miles southwest of the central business district of Carlsbad covering an area of nineteen hundred eighty (1,980) acres, which hosts four (4) runways. The terminal offers services to private pilots, charters, mail and more. Since New Mexico Airlines, an American commuter airline brand founded by Pacific Air Holdings to operate flights in New Mexico, was awarded an Essential Air Service contract to serve Hobbs and Carlsbad, New Mexico the air traffic is steadily increasing. The airline started flights on July 1, 2007 and uses the airline identifiers and call signs of its parent company Pacific Wings. Since then routes to and from Albuquerque, Alamogordo and El Paso, Texas have be added to the daily flight schedule. They continue to add new services, the most recent is the proposal for flights to Deming and Lubbock, TX.
