Update 4-23-21

After careful consideration on Thursday, we have decided to move our “Spirit of Carlsbad” ceremony to June 17. We just want to make certain we will be able to have the best event possible. We have been in contact with our recipients and are continuing to plan this event.  We’re also very excited that former Mayor Bob Forrest will be helping us with this year’s ceremony.

In addition to our selections this year, we are also going to be presenting several special recognitions, including two local historical efforts. Coach Kent Hitchens has followed up on a process originally started by school board member Ron Singleton with compiling an incredible history of Carlsbad’s track program. Additionally the Southeastern New Mexico Historical Society, which includes Carolyn Olson, Mannie Bemis and Jameson Lucas, will be honored for their outstanding efforts to preserve Jed Howard’s trove of information, including the Near Loving’s Bend web page. Thank you to these groups and the other individuals who work hard to preserve Carlsbad’s history, including our own library.

We’re already starting to get calls about our Fourth of July celebration this year. Independence Day will be on a Sunday, and we are planning another great fireworks celebration for the evening of the Fourth. However, it is our plan to have some events on July 3 and some on July 4 and just really make it a weekend for everyone to remember. We’re going to be meeting soon to develop our agenda for this holiday weekend but we’re certainly looking at having several bands perform throughout the weekend. Please stay tuned for more details and help us keep the local COVID-19 numbers down.

The City of Carlsbad remains committed to helping provide vaccines for anyone who wants them. We believe increasing our vaccine numbers will help us with re-opening our community and protect our residents. To support ongoing vaccine efforts, we are offering free transit rides to anyone within city limits who needs a ride for a COVID-19 vaccine. Please call (575) 887-2121 or email transit@cityofcarlsbadnm.com. Please provide 24 hours advance notice and include your address and destination.

Our friends at Guadalupe Mountains National Park are looking for a couple candidates for their National Park Service Community Volunteer Ambassador program.  CVA’s will

will assist in planning the park 50th Anniversary events and park operations, have an opportunity influence the direction of the program, assist with community engagement programming and the development of social media content, and sharing relevant and challenging stories with the public.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
