Update 4-5-21

Our high school is right in the middle of all three sports seasons right now. Here are a few updates:

Fall Sports: The “regular season” for soccer, volleyball, cross-country and football has concluded. In soccer, the Carlsbad Cavegirls varsity team received the top seed in Class 5A. They will host Volcano Vista in the first round of the playoffs at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Cavegirls have a perfect 8-0 record going into the playoffs. They are averaging nearly four goals per game and seven different players have scored goals so far. Congratulations to Coach Misty Long and the entire team. Misty Long has been an outstanding athlete and an outstanding coach for Carlsbad.

The Cavemen football team lost to Centennial in this year’s bowl game in Las Cruces on Saturday, 40-27, to finish the season with a 2-3 record. Carlsbad’s volleyball team finished its season on March 26 with a loss to Hobbs, but showed improvement from the 2019 season. The boys’ soccer team completed its season on March 6 with a loss to Artesia.

We are now officially in the “Winter” sports season – which includes basketball. The Carlsbad Cavemen beat Artesia, 47-44, on April 3 and the Cavegirls beat Artesia, 37-36 the same day. Basketball season will run through the end of April. Both teams have upcoming games against Artesia, Silver City and Goddard.

Spring season is also just around the corner, as baseball and softball teams began practicing this past week. We can imagine scheduling is very challenging right now for families with multiple students playing multiple sports. Thank you Athletic Director James Johns and our entire athletic department for navigating a complicated sports season, and thank you to the many parents who are juggling several schedules at once.

Spring also means construction season, and Eddy County’s Construction of Old Cavern Highway is scheduled to begin on April 5. Flagging operations will be utilized with advanced warning signs in place to let residents know of lane closures. Motorists should expect travel delays and are encouraged to seek alternate routes of travel. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The sewer project on Callaway Drive is 40 percent complete. The paving at the intersection of Boyd and Hidalgo Road has been completed and striping will take place soon. We are in the process of completing the Boyd Drive project. There’s also a lot of construction of Peach Lane right now – this is a new subdivision going in.

We hope you and your family had a wonderful Easter and are enjoying life getting back to normal.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
