Holiday Safety Reminder: December 29, 2020

While many of us are eager to see 2020 in the rearview mirror, Cindy Sharif and everyone with the Eddy County DWI program want to remind us to safely celebrate the arrival of 2021. Local law enforcement will certainly be out in force on New Year’s Eve making sure not driving while intoxicated or impaired, but it is our hope that everyone simply makes smart choices themselves. Please don’t drink and drive and help make sure your loved ones also stay safe.

Craig Stephens and John Heaton are the chair and co-chair of our higher education task force. They’ve asked for the public’s assistance with the community effort to transition the New Mexico State University-Carlsbad branch campus into an independent college. The state’s Department of Higher Education has asked us for some additional information, and we’d like that packet to include a show of community interest. You can sign the online petition here.

Due to COVID concerns, it is much harder to get a petition out than it normally might be. If you are not a fan of online petitions, we will have a petition downstairs at city hall for you to sign instead by Wednesday. Our goal is to have a locally governed independent college which will focus on the needs of this community by developing partnerships with businesses and a variety of colleges. Thank you to Sheriff Mark Cage, Commissioner Susan Crockett and others who have supported this petition.

We’re still hearing so many great stories about groups helping out those in need over Christmas. Carlsbad, NM VFW Post 8703 Auxiliary distributed Christmas gifts to local veteran nursing home residents and New Mexico state veteran home residents on Christmas Eve. Sponsored by Sendero Midstream, Post 8703 Auxiliary members presented checks to Lakeview Christian Home, Good Life Senior Living and New Mexico State Veterans Home. Thank you to the VFW Post and Sendero for their generosity!

Update from former Carlsbad resident John Andrews. John invited everyone to check out his recent interview with Sir Richard Eyre directly at the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx-v8b17Cck. The interview includes perspectives on stars such as Judi Dench, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, and Kate Winslet, not to mention Mary Soames, the daughter of Sir Winston Churchill. Check it out!

City update: A contractor for the New Mexico National Guard will be conducting a survey at the Carlsbad Municipal Shooting Range (R 314 North Happy Valley Road). The survey involves physically inspecting different parts of the range. The facility will be closed on Tuesday, January 5, and re-open the next day.  Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
