Update: 9-17-20

This is a reminder that a clean-up at Six Mile Dam is scheduled for 7-11 a.m. Sept. 26. The dam is located at the end of Forni Road and all the supplies necessary will be provided, such as gloves, bags, grabbers, buckets, hand sanitizer, snacks, and water.

More assistance is needed to keep the community’s popular recreation area clean.

Groups involved in this project so far include Tracy Hughes and the Bureau of Land Management Team, Mary Garwood and Deanna Taylor with Keep Carlsbad Beautiful, Trish Velt and ConocoPhillips, Southeast Ready Mix, CREED, Rockstar Packing, NGL, Sendero, Welding students at NMSU-C, NWP, Copperhead Services and the Carlsbad Downtown Lion’s Club. Thanks to everyone for their commitment to this cleanup effort.

Another group, Scuba Connection LLC, also recently completed a clean-up out at Six Mile Dam while completing training as well. The “Divers Against Debris” group pulled out tires, a gun safe, and interestingly enough, a token machine. If you join us at the cleanup on Sept. 26, you may find something interesting.

New Mexico Governor Michele Lujan Grisham will be delivering her update on Thursday afternoon. We will certainly provide a summary of what she says in tomorrow’s update. The current emergency public health order is set to expire on Sept. 18. We know a new health order will be issued, but we don’t know what the specifics will be yet.

The state’s weekly report indicates that the prevalence per 100,000 for southeast New Mexico, as of Sept. 15, was 14. This is a decline of 1.2 from the prior week, but it does not appear that our rates are low enough to meet the benchmarks required for Eddy County schools to move into the hybrid model. We will also likely receive an update on this two week compilation of data, which includes “cases per 100,000” and positivity rate. As we have stated below, we believe the social consequences from not having students go to class in person are too dire, and that we need to safely move into the hybrid model as quickly as possible.

There’s a Regional Tourism Town Hall for the southeast part of the state scheduled for 9-10 a.m. Sept. 21. This is being hosted by the New Mexico Tourism Department. For more information, please visit https://www.newmexico.org/industry/upcoming-events/

Trevor Rogers update: Trevor Rogers went three innings in Wednesday’s victory over the Red Sox. He gave up three hits, two walks and one earned run on three strikeouts. It was a solid overall performance, and it sure is nice to have something positive to look forward to lately.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
