Local Election Act Explained

Acting on the recommendation of the State of New Mexico, the City of Carlsbad has opted into the provisions of the 2018 Local Election Act, which provides the option for each municipality to have its officers elected during the November Local Election on non-partisan election years (odd years).

Opting into the Regular Local Election provides cost savings, uniformity of procedure and convenience for voters by combining all non-partisan elections (such as school board and special districts) and may also improve voter turnout. As a method of encouraging uniformity, there is no cost to the Municipalities who opt in.

Carlsbad’s City Council voted to opt into the Regular Local Election at the June 11, 2019, City Council meeting. Most municipalities in New Mexico have also opted into the Regular Local Election. The decision to opt to the Regular Local Election, with extended terms, means that elections for City of Carlsbad officials have been moved to line up with subsequent November elections. Elections for City of Carlsbad officials will now take place on the following dates:

Carlsbad City Council Ward 1 (Current Incumbent: Edward Rodriguez)

Carlsbad City Council Ward 2: (Current Incumbent: Leo Estrada)

Carlsbad City Council Ward 3: (Current Incumbent: Jason Shirley)

Carlsbad City Council Ward 4: (Current Incumbent: Mark Walterscheid)
